What should be the age to become IAS, IPS? How many times can you give UPSC exam?

UPSC Age Limit 2025: Do you know what is the age limit to become an IAS, IPS, IFS officer and how many times do you get a chance to take this exam? Know the important things that candidates should know.

UPSC Exam 2025: The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) examination is considered one of the toughest examinations in the country. Lakhs of students prepare for UPSC Civil Services Exam (CSE) every year for big posts like IAS, IPS, IFS and IRS. Now the Commission has made a big announcement for the candidates. UPSC has decided that now the provisional answer key will be released immediately after the Civil Services Prelims exam. Earlier the candidates had to wait for a whole year, but now this process will become much faster. Along with this announcement, recently UPSC Chairman Dr. Ajay Kumar interacted live with the Civil Service candidates and expressed his opinion on many important things related to them, the most important of which was the issue of age limit and attempts.

Are there any changes in UPSC age limit?

UPSC Chairman clearly said that at present there is no plan to change the age limit. As per the existing rules, the minimum age of the candidate should be 21 years. The maximum age of the candidate should be less than 32 years (for general category). Category wise maximum age limit is as follows-

  • General Category: 32 years
  • OBC: 35 years
  • SC, ST: 37 years

Keeping the cut-off date at August 1 does not harm graduates who complete their degrees in May-June. If it is moved to January 1, many students will lose a year of eligibility.

How many times can you give UPSC exam?

There will be no change in the number of attempts to take the UPSC exam at present. Talking about maximum attempt-

  • General Category: 6 attempts
  • OBC Category: 9 attempts
  • SC, ST Categories: Unlimited Efforts
  • Before 2014, candidates got only 4 attempts, but later it was increased to 6. No further changes are proposed on this at present.

Coaching is not necessary to crack UPSC?

According to UPSC Chairman, coaching is not mandatory for success in UPSC exam. Many students from small cities of the country i.e. Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities are passing even without coaching. He told that nowadays many students with engineering background are also getting success in Civil Services Exam by taking Humanities subject.

Verification of candidates’ certificates through DigiLocker

The Commission is working towards verifying the certificates of the candidates through DigiLocker. This will put a stop to fake documents. If a candidate uses fraudulent or fake certificates, he/she may not only be debarred from the examination but may also be debarred from appearing in any UPSC examination for three years.
