BWF World Junior Championships: Tanvi Sharma’s dream of winning gold ended, but India’s 17-year drought ended

Tanvi Sharma in BWF World Junior Championships: India’s 16 year old badminton player Tanvi Sharma performed brilliantly in the World Junior Badminton Championship and won a medal for India after 17 years. Although his dream of winning the gold medal was shattered in the final, he created history in this tournament. He won the silver medal in this championship. Apart from this, Tanvi is the third player from India to reach the final. Before this, Saina Nehwal and Aparna Popat have also won medals in this tournament.

World Junior badminton Tanvi Sharma had to face defeat in the final of the championship. In the title match, second seeded Anyapat Phichitprichasak of Thailand defeated Tanvi Sharma in straight sets 15-7, 15-12. With this Tanvi had to be satisfied with the silver medal. This is India’s first medal in the World Junior Championship in 17 years. before this Saina Nehwal Ne (Gold in 2008 and Silver in 2006) and Aparna Popat (Silver in 1996) had won medals for India in this competition.

Tanvi’s bad game in the final

At the beginning of the final match, both the players were tied at 2-2 and then at 4-4. After this, the Thai player played brilliantly and took a lead of 10-5. The Thai player sealed the first game by putting Tanvi Sharma’s backhand shot into the net. In the second game, Tanvi made a great start by taking a 6-1 lead through accurate deep returns. However, due to net mistakes the Thai player reduced the gap to 5-7. Despite maintaining a lead of 8-5 till the intermission, the pressure on Tanvi was increasing as Anyapat Phichitprichasak leveled the score and then took the lead at 9-8.

After this, the second seeded player scored excellent points to take her lead to 11-8 and maintained control with sharp cross-court winners. Tanvi showed flexibility with a skillful net dribble while scoring 9-13. She won a disputed point after a long rally, but sent another shot wide, giving her opponent three championship points. Phichitprichasak had a shot wide but sealed the title with a powerful smash on the next point.
