BYD makes their biggest recall to address design and battery issues

New Delhi: Chinese automaker BYD will be making their biggest recall yet with more than 115,000 Tang Series and Yuan Pro Vehicles produced between 2015 and 2022, due to design defects and battery-related safety issues as reported by China’s market regulator on Friday.

BYD have filed a plan State Administration for Market Regulation to recall 44,535 Tang Series vehicles that were produced between March 2015 and July 2017, where certain component design flaws may cause some abnormal functions. It will also call back 71,248 Yuan Pro EVs made between February 2021 and August 2022 over manufacturing issues affecting battery installation.

According to media reports, the Tang Series has a drive motor controller flaw that can trigger abnormal active discharge, causing excess heat that scorches the circuit board and then disables the electric-only mode. Yuan Pro EVs have battery sealing gasket failures, allowing water ingress during high-speed wading, which wither compromises insulation or creates short-circuit risks.

In January, the brand had recalled 6,843 Fangchenbao Bao 5 plug-in hybrid off-road SUVs when they had cited fire risks. Even before the automaker had recalled 97,000 Yuan Plus and Dolphin EVs due to a manufacturing fault involving the steering control unit, which was a fire risk in September 2024.

BYD has come into the Indian market with quite a flair, and in a market that is rising, it is expected to do well. Even though there is competition, they have created a stir.
