Narak Chatudashi Katha (Narak Chatudashi Katha)
According to the legend, a demon named Narakasura had created terror in all the three worlds with his powers. His atrocities had increased so much that even the gods were in pain. Narakasura had taken captive 16 thousand women of gods and saints. Troubled by the atrocities of Narakasura, the gods and sages went to Lord Krishna. Then Shri Krishna assured the gods and goddesses that he would liberate them from the atrocities of Narakasura.
Narakasura could be killed only by the hands of a woman. He was cursed to do so, so Lord Shri Krishna took the help of his wife Satyabhama to kill Nakarasura. With the help of Satyabhama, God destroyed Narakasura. Then all the women were freed from his captivity. After the killing of Narakasura, people lit lamps in their homes on the new moon day of Kartik month. Since then, Narak Chaturdashi and Chhoti Diwali started being celebrated on this day.
