After coming here, Goddess Lakshmi’s mind became restless and she looked towards the south. In this direction, she saw yellow mustard flowers and beautiful sugarcane fields on the earth, seeing which she got fascinated and started adorning herself with those flowers and also started enjoying the sugarcane juice.
When Lord Vishnu saw this, he became angry with Goddess Lakshmi and ordered her to serve the poor farmer on earth who cultivated mustard and sugarcane for 12 years. Goddess Lakshmi went to that farmer’s house and started serving him. By the grace of Goddess Lakshmi, that farmer became rich in no time.
In this way, 12 years passed and Lord Vishnu himself came in human form to take Goddess Lakshmi but the farmer refused to free the goddess. Then Lord Vishnu told the whole truth to that farmer. The farmer asked for a promise from Goddess Lakshmi that she would come every year on Kartik Krishna Trayodashi to give blessings.
Goddess Lakshmi promised him and left with Lord Vishnu. Every year, before the arrival of Goddess Lakshmi, the farmer would clean the house and light a lamp to welcome her. Goddess Lakshmi would have been very happy to see this and blessed him. Due to this the farmer gradually became more prosperous.
When other people came to know about this, they also started cleaning their houses and worshiping Goddess Lakshmi on the date of Kartik Krishna Trayodashi before Diwali. Goddess Lakshmi became even more happy after seeing this. Since then, the tradition of worshiping Goddess Lakshmi on Dhanteras started which continues even today.
