muslim marriage rules
Four marriages have been justified in Islam. However, some conditions have also been kept for this so that women’s rights are not harmed. While a Muslim man can have a maximum of four wives, it has been claimed that such cases have always been seen as an exception. In Islamic countries, equality with wives was said regarding four marriages.
In many Muslim countries, permission and legal process from the first wife is necessary for second marriage. Shariat says that if one cannot fulfill the rights of all the wives, then one should keep only one wife. If a Muslim man has married four times and one of his wives has died or got divorced, can that person marry for the fifth time? In this regard, we talked to the experts of Islam and found out what Islam says…
‘Having four marriages is a complicated matter’
Warish Mazhari, assistant professor in Islamic Studies of Jamia Hamdard University, said that this kind of thing was kept as an exception in the society. Things keep changing from society to society all over the world. This culture is not considered inappropriate in Arab countries. They keep doing one to two, two to four marriages, but one to two and two to three marriages are not a common thing. Only such exceptions come to the fore. For example, if he is not able to have a child from his first wife, then he has to marry a second or third one.
He said that Islam says that a man can have four wives at a time. If he has divorced his wife or she has died, then according to Islamic rules he can remarry, but this is not for everyone, but is an exception. This is a bit complicated issue. There is a need to understand this. In Muslim countries like Egypt, Morocco, Algeria, Turkey, such a rule has been made that if you marry more than one person, you will have to take permission from the first wife. There is a complete legal process for this and it will have to be proved whether there is a need for the next marriage or not. Governments have been given the authority to control such things. Anyone can remarry at any time and anywhere, doing so creates an awkward situation.
‘Islam does not allow spoiling anyone’s life’
Mufti Salauddin Qasmi, an Islamic scholar at Darul Uloom in Dasna, Ghaziabad, said that Islam allows a Muslim man to have four wives at a time. For example, if a person has married four times and one of the wives passes away or gets divorced, then he can marry for the fifth time. Islam says that if any person marries for the second or third time then there should be equality between all of them. Their rights should be paid.
He said that if a person wants to marry for the third or fourth time, he should be powerful enough to fulfill the rights of all the wives. For example, a man can fulfill the needs of only one wife, but his condition is not such that he can fulfill the wishes of the other wife. Shariat says that if you cannot fulfill the needs of two, three or four wives then keep only one wife, in such a case second or third marriage is not allowed in Shariat because then you will spoil the life of that woman. Islam does not allow spoiling anyone’s life.
