Heavy rains expected in Kerala till October 21, Orange alert issued in Ernakulam

Thiruvananthapuram: Forecasting heavy rainfall in the coming days, the weather department has informed heavy downpour in the central and south districts of Kerala. As of Friday, the India Meteorological department has issued alerts for heavy rainfall in Kerala, following the onset of the Northeast Monsoon.

A low-pressure area is forming in the Arabian Sea, which will continue to affect the weather in the coming days. The following alerts are active for today, October 17, as well as for the coming weekend.

According to IMD, Ernakulam and Pathanamthitta recorded isolated rainfall of 5 cm, followed by 4 cm in Thiruvananthapuram, Alappuzha, and Kottayam on October 16. However, none of the 137 stations that reported rainfall recorded heavy showers.

A low-pressure system is expected to form over the Arabian Sea near the Kerala coast by October 19.

An Orange Alert (Very Heavy Rainfall) has been Issued for Ernakulam district today. Yellow Alert (Heavy Rainfall) is been issued for Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha, Thrissur and Palakkad.

The north-east monsoon has set in over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema, south interior Karnataka and Kerala.
