Parag Jain, a senior IPS officer of Punjab cadre and the mastermind of Operation Sindoor, will be the next Chief of Raw.
The Government of India has decided the name of the new head of its international intelligence agency Research and Analysis Wing (RAW). Parag Jain, a senior IPS officer of the 1989 batch Punjab cadre and the mastermind of Operation Sindoor, will be its next Chief. He will take charge on July 1 (2025). Currently Jain is the head of the Aviation Research Center and has been appointed the next Executive Secretary of RAW, which he will take up for two years. He will replace Ravi Sinha in Raw, whose term will end on 30 June 2025.
Let us know why Raw became and what work does it work? What are its achievements and how is its head chosen?
Raw was born like this
This is a matter of the 1965 India-Pakistan war. This war that lasted for 22 days did not result in no result, while India’s pan was heavy. By the time the ceasefire was declared on 22 September, all the weapons of Pakistan were over and the US had also banned it from giving new weapons. In such a situation, he did not even get new weapons. However, India could not get intelligence about the fact that Pakistan does not have weapons, otherwise the result of this war would have something else.
The book by Sankaran Nair, former head of RAW, is IB & RAW: The Rolling Stone the Gedard Moss. In this, he has written that the then Army Chief General JN Chaudhary gave a report to the then Defense Minister Yashwant Rao Chavan. In this, he wrote that the Indian Army could not achieve a decisive victory over Pakistan, because we did not have accurate intelligence information, while the responsibility of gathering information was given to the Intelligent Bureau (IB) Nakara detectives.
Following this criticism by the Chief of Army Staff, the government decided to form a new international intelligence agency Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) to gather intelligence from other countries.
Established on 21 September 1968
Raw was established on 21 September 1968. Its first head was made to Rameshwar Nath Kav. Sankaran Nair received the second position in RAW. Apart from these, 250 more people were transferred from IB to Raw. After 1971, RAW chief Ramnath Kav started choosing RAW agents directly from colleges and universities. However, in 1973, this tradition changed and the people selected directly had to take many types of examinations. These included psychological tests, objective tests, interviews etc.
Now this is how appointment in RAW
Quoting Raw’s Special Secretary Rana Banerjee, the BBC has stated in a report that between 1985 and 1990, some more people were admitted in RAW, which made special service. However, this experiment was later stopped. Now more than 95 percent of the people are selected for RAW only through the Indian Police Service. In Raw, those who watch economic intelligence are taken from custom and income tax service.
Main work gathering intelligence from abroad
The main task of RAW is to gather foreign intelligence information. It is also the responsibility of RAW to thwart foreign conspiracies against the country, to end terrorism and advise India’s policy makers. Raw also conducts secret campaign in other countries in the interest of its country. Especially, neighboring countries gather intelligence from China and Pakistan, in which it has now been mastered. This agency has also been appointed under the protection of Indian nuclear programs.
Raw’s name many anonymous achievements
Usually, the biggest work done by intelligence agencies remains secret. Nevertheless, there are many such achievements, which come out. One of these achievements is the important role of RAW in the construction of Bangladesh. If the Indian forces chewed Pakistan in the Bangladesh liberation struggle, then the information given by Raw also had an important role in it. Apart from this, Mukti Vahini of Bangladesh was trained through RAW. Intelligence information and training were strengthened by giving ammunition. Raw also kept an eye on the movement of the Pakistani Army in the then East Pakistan, which helped a lot in the formation of Bangladesh.
It was also never revealed that during the Kargil war, the first faces of Pakistani intruders were faced by Raw people. Then 80 RAW agents were stationed on the border, some of whom also made their supreme sacrifice and did not return alive but their names were not revealed. However, then there was a demand in Raw that at least those who sacrificed their sacrifice in the Kargil war should be honored in public, but the then National Security Advisor Brajesh Mishra opposed it. However, when this matter reached Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, special medals were given to those 18 officers of RAW in a closed hall of the Prime Minister’s residence. The Prime Minister himself joined hands with the high officials of RAW and thanked the sacrifice of anonymous heroes. However, there is no official record of this ceremony.
This is how the appointment of the head of Raw
The responsibility of the head of RAW is usually assigned to the senior -most and experienced officer. The Government of India takes its decision. Special care is taken in this. Parag Jain, head of Aviation Research Center, meets this criterion. During Operation Sindoor against Pakistan, he helped his forces a lot from intelligence information. IPS officer Jain has been the SSP of Chandigarh. As an Indian representative, he has celebrated his iron in Canada and Sri Lanka, while he has played an important role against terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir. He has a special hold on Pakistan and Afghanistan and can play an important role in tightening the terrorism sponsored from across the border due to expertise against terrorism.
