New Delhi: Yashasvi Jaiswal slammed a terrific century to help India continue their dominance in the second session on Day 3 and post 304/6, extending their lead to 281 runs at Tea in the 5th Test against England at The Oval. Jaiswal notched up his sixth Test ton en route to a brilliant knock of 118 runs off 164 balls, laced with 14 fours and two sixes. He shared a 107-run partnership for the 3rd wicket with nightwatchman Akash Deep, who played a fabulous knock of 66 runs.
While Akash Deep was dismissed at the stroke of lunch, India lost skipper Shubman Gill cheaply on 11 immediately after the resumption of play. Karun Nair shared a 40-run stand with Jaiswal for the 5th wicket, before edging a short ball from pacer Gus Atkinson to England wicket-keeper Jamie Smith to get dismissed on 17 off 32 balls.
Jaiswal then combined with Ravindra Jadeja to share another important stand of 44 runs for the sixth wicket before getting caught off the bowling of Josh Tongue. Jaiswal was caught by Jamie Overton on the boundary rope after failing to get enough connection on his upper cut. He was looking to send the ball over Overton, but ended up picking the fielder, bringing an end to his classy knock.
After Jaiswal’s departure, Jadeja and Dhruv Jurel took control of India’s second innings, helping them cruise. Jadeja returned unbeaten on 26, while Jurel was batting on 25 as the duo shared a 31-run stand for the seventh wicket to help India reach 304/6 at Tea. With Washington Sundar yet to bat, India will hope to continue their strong show with the bat and try to play out the final session to extend their lead close to 400 runs in their second innings.
Yashasvi Jaiswal bounces back with sublime ton
After managing only 2 runs in India’s first innings, Jaiswal, who has struggled with consistency in England, bounced back with a sublime 118-run knock in the visitors’ second innings at The Oval. The left-hander looked in splendid touch as he manouvered the field to perfection, taking the English bowlers to the cleaners with a batting masterclass.
