Tennis legend Novak Djokovic buys stake in French football club Le Mans

New Delhi: The 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic is stepping into the world of football as he has become part of a group of investors that has purchased a stake in French club Le Mans FC, a team that currently plays in the country’s second tier.

Djokovic is joined by two other well-known names from the sporting world, former Formula 1 drivers Felipe Massa and Kevin Magnussen. The club confirmed the trio’s involvement in a statement on Friday, adding to a growing list of international backers investing in the club.

Star-studded group of backers

The investment group includes Latin American sports firm OutField and entrepreneur Georgios Frangulis, who is best known as the CEO of OakBerry, a global acai brand. Frangulis is also the partner of women’s tennis star Aryna Sabalenka, adding another link to the tennis world.

Le Mans president Thierry Gomez highlighted the “unique” nature of the fund, praising the involvement of elite athletes. “Novak Djokovic, Felipe Massa and Kevin Magnussen will be part of the adventure,” Gomez said in the official statement. The financial details of the deal have not been made public yet.

Djokovic expands his sporting reach

This marks a new kind of venture for Djokovic, who at 38 continues to compete at the highest level in tennis. His career tally includes 100 titles and a record 24 Grand Slam wins but this move signals his interest in contributing to the sports industry beyond the court.

Massa, once a key figure at Ferrari, came within one point of winning the 2008 F1 title. Meanwhile, Magnussen has close to 200 races under his belt and was last seen racing for Haas in 2023.

Looking forward

Le Mans FC is celebrating their 40th anniversary and will kick off its new campaign on August 9. The club is based in the city of Le Mans, famous globally for hosting the iconic 24-hour endurance car race. With new investors and fresh ambition, Le Mans will hope this backing translates into results on the pitch.
