Ever since the Board of Control for Cricket in India announced its central contracts for this year, there has been a debate on it. Is it right to release Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer from their contracts as punishment? This question is being asked. Both of them were not included in the contract list due to not playing Ranji Trophy. In this matter too, there is a lot of debate about Shreyas Iyer whether something wrong has happened with him? The reason behind these questions will be explained in this article.
First of all, let us tell you that Shreyas Iyer was kept in B grade in the contract last year, in which he was to get a fixed salary of Rs 3 crore per year. When the contracts were released this year, Iyer’s name was not there, apart from him there are important players like Ishan Kishan and Yuzvendra Chahal, who have been left out of the contract list. Iyer and Ishan were punished for not playing Ranji Trophy despite repeated requests from BCCI. But did Shreyas really deserve it?
What went wrong with Iyer?
This question is arising because after the end of the Test series against South Africa last month and before the start of the India-England Test series, Shreyas played a Ranji Trophy match on behalf of his Mumbai team. Then after the first two test matches against England, Iyer was dropped from the team. This is where all the confusion started. The reason for this is Iyer’s back pain, which was treated only last year. Now if Iyer had already played a Ranji match then his exclusion in this manner raises questions.
It was believed that Shreyas withdrew from the remaining 3 matches of the Test series due to injury. Not only this, due to this pain he could not play some Ranji Trophy matches for Mumbai. However, the National Cricket Academy had sent a report to BCCI, in which Iyer was declared fit. In such a situation, the question arises whether Iyer lied on his fitness or is there an error in the NCA report?
Was Rohit Sharma really fit?
This question is being raised because according to BCCI rules, any contracted player has to go to NCA in case of injury, where the medical team takes care of him, but in the recent times, the image of NCA has also proved to be tarnished and their decisions. Has proved to be a cause of tension for Team India. Shreyas Iyer himself has become a victim of this. In January 2023, Iyer was out due to back pain. It took a long time for him to return and he could not play the first match of the Test series against Australia. After this, NCA declared him fit but after playing two matches, his pain resurfaced in the middle of the fourth test and then he remained out of action for about 5-5 months.
NCA is also under question
Not only Iyer, this has happened in the cases of other players also. The example of Jasprit Bumrah is most important. The star Indian pacer has recently made a comeback after injury. In 2022, he suddenly complained of back pain and was out for some time. Couldn’t even play Asia Cup. Although then NCA declared him fit but after 2 matches he got injured and returned directly in 2023, where once again questions are being raised on the medical team of NCA and its functioning.
The question is whether the players have lost confidence in the NCA? Before all this, Hardik Pandya, after undergoing back treatment after the 2019 World Cup, was with the medical team of IPL’s own franchise Mumbai Indians instead of NCA. Even at that time there was a lot of hue and cry regarding this issue. Now once again NCA is in the news. Will Shreyas really be able to trust NCA again for his back injury?
