Urmila Matondkar Reimagines ‘Mere Piya Gaye Rangoon’, Pays Homage to Classic Cinema

Actress Urmila Matondkar recently offered a heartfelt tribute to the golden era of black-and-white cinema with her rendition of the timeless song ‘Mere Piya Gaye Rangoon’.

This classic track, originally from the 1949 film ‘Patanga’, holds a special place in Indian cinematic history.

Matondkar shared a captivating black-and-white video on her official Instagram handle, showcasing her performance of the popular number. Dressed in a traditional long kurta paired with a skirt, she completed her vintage look with elaborate jhumkas and a classic hairdo reminiscent of that era. Her caption expressed her deep affection: “Tribute to my love for black n white cinema..old Hindi songs n all the nostalgia that comes with it.”

The original ‘Mere Piya Gaye Rangoon’ was picturised on actors Gope and Mohana Cabral, set against the backdrop of World War II. The song was crooned by the legendary C. Ramchandra, who also composed the music, alongside Shamshad Begum.

Beyond her musical tributes, the ‘Rangeela’ actress frequently engages with her audience through social media. In a recent update from October, Matondkar shared glimpses of her spiritual journey to the historic hilltop Sanjivani Hanuman Temple. She highlighted the popular local legend associated with the temple, where Lord Hanuman’s foot is believed to have touched the hill while carrying the Sanjeevani mountain. “The peace that you feel here is unmissable,” she noted, sharing photos of her seeking divine blessings.
