Basement collapse in Ghaziabad society after heavy rain, 4 cars sink into ground

Ghaziabad: A major incident was reported late at night in Ghaziabad’s Sushant Aquapolis Society near Crossings Republik, where a portion of the basement collapsed following heavy rains, creating a massive sinkhole. Four cars and two two-wheelers were swallowed by the sudden ground cave-in, triggering panic among residents.

Speaking to News9, Brijesh, the RWA president of the society, recounted the incident, saying that around 2 AM the security guards noticed the ground giving way and immediately alerted residents. “But before anyone could take action, the cars had already started sinking. We couldn’t do anything,” he said.

Brijesh also pointed out that residents had repeatedly raised concerns with authorities about severe waterlogging during heavy rains, but no preventive action was taken. Even after the incident, no immediate help arrived from the administration. “We had to call the crane service ourselves and rescue the cars. Two scooters are still inside the sinkhole,” he added.

An SHO from the area visited the spot later in the day and instructed that the affected area be sealed. She also mentioned that if required, the buildings around the site may be evacuated, considering the high risk posed by further soil erosion.

One of the car owners, visibly shaken, told News9, “For a middle-class family, a car is not just a vehicle, it’s an achievement. This was our first car. Now it’s gone. Who will compensate us? Who is accountable?”

Municipal Corporation Commissioner Vikramaditya Malik, who inspected the site, said the collapse appears to have been caused by long-standing drainage issues. “There is clear erosion of the soil beneath. It’s not just the rain builder negligence and GDA’s role will also be investigated. Action will be taken against all those responsible,” he said.
