One More Match, One Historic Record: Rohit Sharma Set To Make History

Rohit Sharma wil make his return to international cricket when India take on Afghanistan in the first ODI of the three-match series on Saturday (June 13).

Rohit was asked to clear a fitness test and he only joined the team after clearing it. He had suffered a hamstring injury during IPL 2026. Rohit did make his return to the playing XI but played as an Impact Player after his return. Rohit is now set to open the innings with Shubman Gill in the ODI series.

Rohit will create history and etch his name in record books the moment he takes the field in Dharamsala. Here, we have a look at the record –

Rohit Sharma to become oldest Indian to play ODI


Aged 39 years and 44 days, Rohit Sharma will become the oldest Indian ODI player. The record presently belongs to Mohinder Amarnath, who was 39 years and 36 days old on the day of his last ODI in October 1989. He was the vice-captain of the 1983 World Cup-winning team.

Sachin Tendulkar was 38 years old when he played his last ODI. He played his last ODI in March 2012. The Master Blaster was more than 40 when he played his last Test in 2013. Should Rohit continue to play till the 2027 ODI World Cup, he will become the first-ever Indian to play an ODI aged 40.

Rohit Sharma ODI career

Rohit Sharma made his ODI debut in 2007. He was in and out of the national team till 2013. After struggling in the middle order, he was given the opening job by MS Dhoni during the home ODI series against England in January 2013.

Rohit capitalised on the opportunity and former a solid opening pair with Shikhar Dhawan. They continue to play together till 2022. Rohit has excelled on the batting front as an opener and has piled up 11577 runs in 282 maches. His tally includes 33 centuries. He is the only batter to score more than one (3) double century in ODIs. Rohit-led India won the 2025 Champions Trophy and qualified for the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup.
