Monsoon spoiled the game of cooling products, sword hanging on people’s job

Summer sales

This time the early monsoon has affected the sale of cooling products. There has been a huge decline in sales of products like air conditioner, fridge, ice cream and cold drinks. Due to this, the jobs of people associated with this industry are under threat.

In the April-June 2025 quarter, AC sales fell by 30–35% compared to the previous year, while the fridge sales decreased by 12–15%. This was the worst summer season for cooling products in more than a decade. Repeated rain and low temperatures affected sales in the summer season. Last year, due to heat in 2024, AC sales had jumped 55%, but this year the weather did not support.

Demand reduction

The sales of ice cream and cold drinks were also less than in the previous year. According to the data of the bjom, the sale of beverages declined by 9% in the first half of June, compared to 22-24% in May-June last year. The demand for ice cream also increased only 3-7% in the June quarter this year, which is much lower than the last year’s 17-26%.

Effect on job

This decline has also affected employment. The number of temporary jobs has decreased by up to 30% during the summer season, especially in areas such as consumer durables, e-commerce and retail. According to staffing firm Edco India, this year the increase of temporary jobs in the summer remained negligible. Voltas Managing Director Pradeep Bakshi said that there has been a huge decrease in the sales of AC, due to which companies have reduced production and stock has been deposited with dealers.

However, some brands like Amul achieved a slight increase in ice cream sales on the basis of their strategy and expansion. But overall, the irregularity of monsoon and cold weather has shocked the market of cooling products, affecting both industry and employment.
