Immortal Review: GV Prakash Kumar, Kayadu Lohar’s Romance Overshadows The Horror

Mariyappan Chinna’s directorial debut Immortal has premiered on SonyLIV. Starring GV Prakash Kumar and Kayadu Lohar, the Tamil romantic horror-thriller builds an intriguing world consisting of a supernatural being. However, the movie falls prey to convenient plot points making it difficult to root for Kumar’s character Magi. The underwhelming climax sequence feels like a let down.

Immortal: Plot & Cast

The plot of the film is quite simple. It centres around Magi, who has been working at his uncle’s printing press alongside his best friend. As he is forced to vacate his small flat, he sets out on a hunt for a new place to live. However, all he ever gets is rejections. One day, he gets a call from a woman named Sindhu, who lives in a high-rise apartment complex. She offers him the luxury apartment, and the two start living together happily.

As their friendship blossoms into a relationship, it starts going downhill for him, when he realises that Sindhu is not a human, but a supernatural being. What happens next? Will he be able to escape alive?

Immortal: What Works

Well, what works best for me is the background score. It blends well with the ongoing plot, keeping you at the edge of your seat. As well as the cinematography by Arun Radhakrishnan, which keeps you intrigued enough to want to watch until the movie ends.

The plot of the movie starts on a stronger note, set about 1000-years ago in a tribal setting, where a supernatural creature takes birth. It immediately switches to the present era, where Magi and Sindhu’s romance paves way to a horror story, which one can’t even imagine in their life.

Immortal: What Doesn’t Work

Both the actors do their best as performers. However, the lack of good CGI and an overcrowded and rushed pacing of the film, makes it harder to connect with not only the characters, but also the plot. By the end of it, you already know how the film is going to conclude.

Immortal: Final Verdict

All in all, the movie is an okay-ish time-pass watch, if you want something playing in the background, while you are completing your chores. The movie is currently available to watch on SonyLIV.
