What scriptures say about Lord Kalki’s arrival in Kali Yuga

Mumbai: In Hinduism, it is believed that whenever evil spreads rampantly and righteousness is threatened, the Divine takes form on Earth to restore balance. Throughout the ages, Lord Vishnu—the preserver in the Holy Trinity—is said to have incarnated in various avatars to uphold dharma (cosmic order). While nine of these avatars have already manifested, the tenth—Kalki—is yet to arrive.

According to ancient texts, Kalki is destined to appear at the end of the current age, Kali Yuga, to rid the world of evil and establish a new era of truth and virtue. Revered as the harbinger of Satya Yuga, Kalki’s arrival is not only foretold in the Kalki Purana, but also echoed in the Shrimad Bhagavatam and other sacred scriptures. Here’s what we know about this awaited divine warrior.

Who is Lord Kalki?
As per Hindu mythology, Lord Kalki is the tenth and final incarnation of Lord Vishnu. He has not yet descended on Earth, and it is believed that he will appear at the very end of Kali Yuga, the current age known for strife, dishonesty, and spiritual decline. When dharma (righteousness) is in peril and the world is gripped by adharma (unrighteousness), Kalki will manifest to destroy evil and re-establish truth.

How Long Will Kalki Avatar Live?
The Kalki Purana prophesies that Lord Kalki will be born during the closing phase of Kali Yuga, and his lifespan will exceed 100 years. His arrival will mark the end of this dark age and usher in the beginning of Satya Yuga—the age of truth. It is written that he will possess mastery over 64 divine arts (kalaas), and he will have three brothers who will support him in restoring dharma.

When and Where Will Lord Kalki Be Born?
When: Kalki will be born during the transitional phase between the end of Kali Yuga and the beginning of Satya Yuga.

Date: On the fifth day (Panchami) of the bright fortnight (Shukla Paksha) in the month of Shravan.

Where: In Sambhal, a town in Uttar Pradesh, India.

Family: He will be born into a Brahmin family. His father will be named Vishnuyasha and his mother will be Sumati.

Kalki Will Master 64 Divine Arts
Religious beliefs hold that Kalki’s guru will be Parashurama—another immortal avatar of Vishnu. Kalki will be trained in all 64 classical arts and will be revered as a flawless incarnation (Nishkalank Avatar). He will be a supreme warrior, well-versed in Vedic knowledge, and blessed with divine brilliance. Riding the celestial white horse Devadatta, he will wage war against evil and injustice.

Who Will Lord Kalki Destroy?
Lord Kalki’s chief mission will be to eliminate Kali, the demon symbolising spiritual ignorance, corruption, and deceit in the current age. By destroying Kali and his influence, Kalki will restore harmony and cosmic balance on Earth.

Who Will Kalki Marry?
According to the Kalki Purana, Lord Vishnu’s Kalki avatar will marry Padma, considered an incarnation of Goddess Lakshmi. Padma will be the daughter of King Brihadratha and Queen Kaumudi of Simhala (present-day Sri Lanka). Some interpretations also suggest that Kalki may have a second divine consort—Ramaa, a powerful form of Devi Vaishnavi.
