‘Captain of India’: Shaun Pollock mistakenly calls Shan Masood as Indian skipper during Pakistan and South Africa Test match

New Delhi: South Africa’s legendary all-rounder Shaun Pollock’s slip of tongue made a huge blunder in the first Test match between Pakistan and South Africa at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore on Sunday, October 12.

Pollock mistakenly called Pakistan Test skipper Shan Masood as ‘captain of India.’ After the 39th over of Pakistan’s innings, the cameraman showed a fan holding a banner named ‘King Babar.’ Pollock showed his disbelief at the fact that the crowd wants their skipper to dismiss just to see Babar Azam on the crease. By passing this comment, he refers to Masood as the captain of India.

“There’s the reason why they were upset. I can’t believe they would want Shan Masood, the captain of India to be out in order just to get Babar to the crease. You need to have a word with some of these supporters,” Shaun Pollock stated on commentary.

Ultimately, Masood was dismissed in the 48th over as Prenelan Subrayen trapped him in front of the stumps on 76 runs. Azam made her way to the crease after the Pakistan skipper’s dismissal and received a huge cheer from the crowd. Chants of ‘Babar Babar’ filled the stadium by the fans.

However, the return of Babar didn’t go his way, as he survived a close appeal at the start of the innings, but his innings didn’t last long, and he was eventually dismissed on 23 runs by Simon Harmer.

Pakistan finish 313/5 in Day 1

Pakistan batters did a decent job on the first day of the first Test match, as they finished the day with 313/5 in the 90 overs. Muhammad Rizwan and Salman Ali Agha took Pakistan to stumps and added an unbeaten 114-run stand.

Abdullah Shafique felt cheaply in the beginning of the innings as Rabada struck early to dismiss him for just two runs. But after Shafique’s dismissal, Imam-ul-Haq and skipper Shan Masood made a 161-run stand for the second partnership.

Both batters scored fifties, but Imam was dismissed in his 90s as he was just seven runs short of his ton before Senuran Muthuswamy sent him to the pavilion. Masood was dismissed on 76 runs, and Saud Shakeel departed without troubling the scorers.

Rizwan and Agha saved the day for the hosts and remained unbeaten on 62 and 52 runs, respectively.
