West Indies conceded a first innings lead of 270 runs at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Sunday after being bowled out for 248 following India’s effort of 518/5d batting first. Resuming overnight from 140/4, Shai Hope and Tevin Imlach trotted along to be on the verge of a half-century stand when Kuldeep Yadav wreaked havoc by scalping three wickets in quick succession to leave the Windies reeing at 175/8. However, just when the Caribbean nation looked on the brink of folding out for cheap, tailenders Khary Pierre and Anderson Phillip dug in against the odds to survive a lethal spell of spin bowling and edge the team closer to Lunch. However, as much as the duo were desperate to survive the session, the hosts were not very keen either on continuing without a break resulting in an absurd on-field circumstance.
Washington Sundar had the ball in hand for the 71st over and with his typical metronomic accuracy breezed through his over in no time, meaning a few seconds still remained before it was time for recess. Nevertheless, the Indian contingent was convinced time was up and Rahul made sure to get his point across. As he walked round the stumps at the end of the over, the veteran clipped off the bails — a usual indicator of the session’s end. However, umpire Richard Illingworth was not convinced, and silently went over to stand at his mark even as both teams began walking off. After a few secionds of confusion, the players quickly returned to their stations, allowing one more over to go through before Lunch was finally called.
Twitterati was amused to say the least.
