Yemen Launches New e-Visa System to Simplify Travel for Foreign Visitors

In a move aimed at simplifying travel and restoring confidence among international visitors, Yemen has officially launched an electronic visa (e-Visa) system for foreigners. The initiative, introduced on June 24, 2025, is part of a larger digital transformation effort to modernise public services and boost border security.

The e-Visa rollout comes at a time when Yemen is working to rebuild its global ties amid years of internal conflict, humanitarian challenges, and limited consular operations abroad.

What Is Yemen’s New e-Visa System?

The e-Visa system, managed by the Immigration, Passports and Nationality Authority (IPNA), was developed with support from the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) and funded by the United States. The new platform is now live at yemenevisa.org.

Travellers can use the portal to apply online for various types of visas, including:

  • Business Visa
  • Diplomatic Visa
  • Exit Visa
  • Multi-Entry Visa
  • Special Visa
  • Tourist Visa
  • Transit Visa
  • Work Visa

This single-window approach marks a significant shift from Yemen’s previous manual visa process, which was often delayed due to administrative hurdles and limited embassy services.

Application Process: Fully Digital but with a Payment Catch

To apply, users must:

  1. Create an account on the official platform.
  2. Fill in the application form corresponding to the visa type.
  3. Upload documents, including:
    • A passport valid for at least 6 months
    • Return ticket
    • Health certificate
    • Supporting documents like invitation letters or admission certificates

While the application process is nearly 100% digital, online payments are not yet available. Instead, travellers must make cash payments in USD at the Immigration office or via designated consulates and embassies. Online payment functionality is expected once global electronic payment systems are integrated.

Once submitted, applicants can expect their e-Visa to be issued within 3 to 5 business days via email.

Why This Matters for Travellers

This new system offers a safer, faster, and more reliable way to enter Yemen, particularly for tourists and business travellers. It also reduces dependence on in-person embassy services, which have been inconsistent due to political and security issues.

With Yemen’s rich cultural heritage, historical architecture, and unique landscapes, the e-Visa may encourage a new wave of adventurous travellers looking for off-the-beaten-path destinations.

Other Visa Options for Travellers to Yemen

Despite the new e-Visa system, traditional visa requirements remain in place for many travellers. Here’s a breakdown of available options:

1. Business Visa

Most commonly issued for foreign nationals, especially from countries where tourist visas are not available. Requires an invitation letter from a Yemeni company or organisation, a valid passport, recent photos, and a health certificate. Processing typically takes up to 7 days.

2. Student Visa

For those studying in Yemen, a letter of acceptance from the institution is required, along with other standard documents.

3. Diplomatic/Official Visa

Available to government officials and diplomats, with additional documentation such as a letter from the relevant government agency.

4. Tourist Visa

While the new e-Visa system mentions group tourism visas, individual tourist visas are not always available. Some embassies, such as the Yemeni Embassy in Washington, D.C., are currently not issuing tourist visas.

Travel Tips and Considerations

  • Visa on Arrival: Not available for most nationalities, including Indians and Americans. All visas must be obtained before travel.
  • Health Requirements: A medical certificate confirming the absence of infectious diseases is mandatory for all visa types.
  • Travel Insurance: Strongly recommended due to the ongoing instability and potential for emergencies.

Looking Ahead

The launch of Yemen’s e-Visa system is a promising development for travellers and business professionals. By digitising the application process, Yemen aims to make entry procedures more efficient and secure.

However, travellers should check the latest updates from Yemeni embassies and consulates, as visa policies and availability can change rapidly due to the country’s complex political situation
