India’s largest public sector bank State Bank of India (SBI) has made a plan to increase the number of women employees. Its aim is to increase the number of its female employees to 30% in the next 5 years. SBI has more than 2.4 lakh employees, which is the highest in any organization in the country and the highest in the banking sector.

SBI Deputy Managing Director (HR) and Chief Development Officer (CDO) Kishore Kumar Poludasu said in an interview that if we talk about frontline employees, about 33% of them are women, but overall this number is 27%. Therefore, we will work on improving this number. He said that the bank is taking steps to reduce this gap and achieve its target of increasing the number of women employees to 30%.

Better work place for women

Kishore Kumar Poludasu further said that bank Wants to create a workplace where women can thrive at all levels. For this, SBI is promoting leadership and work-life balance by running special programs. Highlighting some of the steps taken by the bank for women, Poludasu said the bank provides crèche allowance to working mothers, runs ‘Family Connect Programme’ and runs training programs to help women employees returning from maternity, long leave or sick leave.

Initiative for women

Apart from this, Poludasu said that ‘Empower Her’ is a main initiative. It aims to identify, mentor and prepare women for leadership roles. This includes leadership labs and coaching sessions to build a strong team of top women executives for the future. This is proved by the fact that SBI has more than 340 such branches across the country where only women employees work and this number will increase further in future.

The SBI official further said that women employees are present in all areas and at all job levels, which shows the bank’s commitment towards inclusivity. He also added that the bank has a group of IT expert officers who focus on security, efficiency and innovation of banking operations. SBI is among the top 50 banks in the world in terms of its assets and has been recognized as a best employer by many organizations.
