Muttaki is on a six-day tour of India
Afghanistan’s Foreign Minister Aamir Muttaki is currently on a six-day visit to India. He reached New Delhi on Thursday. On Saturday, he visited the famous Islamic educational institution Darul Uloom in Deoband, Saharanpur, where he was warmly welcomed. It is noteworthy that this is the first high-level visit by a senior leader of the Taliban government to India, four years after the Taliban took power in Afghanistan. India has not yet given official recognition to the Taliban regime, hence this visit of Muttaki is especially in the news.
Muttaki had reached Deoband by road.
Muttaki’s journey from Delhi to Deoband was by road. During this time the Afghan delegation was also present with him. Mohtamim Abul Qasim Nomani of Darul Uloom Deoband, Jamiat Ulama-e-Hind President Maulana Arshad Madani and other senior officials welcomed him. Tight security arrangements were made in Deoband by intelligence agencies and police ahead of his visit. The visit was being seen as a sign of a possible new beginning in India-Afghan relations.
Important journey amid tension with Pakistan
Muttaki’s visit to India comes at a time when both India and Afghanistan are going through strained relations with Pakistan over cross-border terrorism and other issues. In such a situation, Muttaki’s visit and its sudden cancellation is giving rise to many diplomatic speculations.
