Haryana IPS officer Y. The case of Puran Kumar’s death is now embroiled in a new controversy. The family has accused the Chandigarh Police of sending the officer’s body to the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) without permission. The family says that they were not even informed about this. The deceased officer’s brother-in-law and Aam Aadmi Party MLA (Bathinda Rural) Amit Rattan said, “Chandigarh Police has shifted the body without the consent of the family. This is injustice to the family.”
Haryana government took first action, Rohtak SP transferred
Four days after the officer’s death, the Haryana government on Saturday took the first action in the case by transferring Rohtak SP Narendra Bijarnia and replacing him with Surendra Singh Bhoria. Bijarnia, a 2015 batch IPS officer, was among the officers whose names figure in the “final note” found in Puran Kumar’s pocket.

Scheduled Caste Commission took cognizance
The matter has now taken a constitutional turn. Taking suo motu cognizance on this issue, Punjab State Scheduled Caste Commission has sought a report from Chandigarh DGP Sagar Preet Hooda.
DGP Hooda clarified, post mortem will be done only with the consent of the family.
DGP Sagar Preet Hooda on Saturday visited the residence of the deceased’s wife and IAS officer Amneet P. Kumar and met the family. He said that the police have requested the family to conduct the post-mortem soon. “The post-mortem will be conducted only after getting the consent of the family,” Hooda clarified. When asked why the family was not giving consent till now, he said that the family had some serious complaints.
SIT will investigate, board formed, wife Amneet demands amendment in FIR
DGP Hooda said that a Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed under the chairmanship of an IG rank officer for an impartial investigation of the case. A board of magistrates, forensic experts and doctors has been formed for the post-mortem, which will conduct the investigation at PGIMER.
Earlier on Friday, Amneet P. Kumar had written a letter to Chandigarh SSP Kanwardeep Kaur demanding amendment in the FIR. He said that the names of all the accused officers should be accurately recorded in the FIR and appropriate sections should be added by removing the weak sections of the SC/ST Act.
Names of 8 IPS officers are recorded in ‘Final Note’
Deceased IPS Y. The names of eight senior IPS officers are mentioned in the eight-page “final note” found from Puran Kumar. Among these, the names of Haryana DGP Shatrujit Kapoor and Narendra Bijarnia are prominently included. The note claims that these officers together “mentally harassed” Kumar and “tried to malign” his image.
The case increased political stir
There is a stir in administrative circles since the mysterious death of Puran Kumar. Now that the family has accused the police of “arbitrariness and insensitivity”, the matter has become more sensitive. According to sources, the Haryana government is monitoring the matter and the investigation report may be sought soon.
