Story of Kartik month

According to the mythological story of Kartik month, there lived an old woman in a village, who used to observe fast on Kartik. At the time of breaking his fast, Lord Shri Krishna himself used to come and leave with a bowl of Khichdi. A woman in the neighborhood of that old lady was jealous seeing that she had no one but still got Khichdi to eat. One day the old lady went to Ganga to take bath in the month of Kartik and Lord Krishna kept Khichdi behind her. When the neighbor saw that the old lady was not at home, she picked up the kheer from the bowl and threw it out.

When the old lady returned to her home after taking Kartik bath, she did not find the bowl of Khichdi, due to which she remained hungry. That old lady kept saying the same thing again and again, where did my khichdi go and where did my khichdi bowl go. Where the old lady’s neighbor had thrown the khichdi, a plant emerged in which two flowers bloomed.

Once the king passed by the old woman’s house, his eyes fell on those two flowers and he plucked them and brought them home. The king gave those flowers to the queen, just by smelling which the queen became pregnant. After some time the queen gave birth to two sons. When both the sons grew up, they did not speak to anyone, but whenever they both went hunting, they would meet the same old woman on the way, who would still say, where have my khichdi and my bowl gone? Every time after listening to the old lady, both of them would give the same answer that I am your Khichdi and I am your Bela (bowl).

Once this matter reached the king’s ears, he was surprised that the two boys did not speak to anyone, but how did they talk to the old woman. Then the king called the old woman to the palace and said that both our sons do not talk to anyone but how do they talk to you? Then the old lady said, Maharaj, I don’t know how he speaks to me. I used to fast only in the month of Kartik and Lord Krishna used to give me a bowl full of Khichdi.

But when I returned home after taking Kartik bath, I neither found Khichdi nor the bowl there. Then I started saying where did my khichdi go and where did my bowl go? Then these two boys listened to me and said that when your neighbor threw your Khichdi, it turned into two flowers and the king plucked this flower and took it away and the queen smelled it and we two boys were born. Lord Krishna has sent us for you. Hearing all this, the king ordered the old woman to stay in the palace.
