New Delhi: Former India batter Mohammad Kaif heaped praise on Yashasvi Jaiswal after his terrific 175-run knock in the ongoing 2nd Test against West Indies at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi. Kaif hailed Jaiswal for his temperament and ability to play big knocks and said the 23-year-old left-hander has got what it takes to break Virender Sehwag’s record of triple hundreds in Test cricket.
After ending Day 1 with an unbeaten 173, Jaiswal looked destined to notch up his third double century on Day 2 of the Delhi Test against West Indies on Saturday. However, the left-hander departed on 175 after a terrible mix-up with skipper Shubman Gill resulted in an unfortunate run-out. Jaiswal ended up missing out on a well-deserved double ton in the Test match.
Nonetheless, his brilliant 175 set the tone for India as the hosts dominated the proceedings with the bat and posted a huge total of 518/5 before declaring their first innings post Lunch on Day 2. Impressed by Jaiswal’s stupendous batting, Kaif took to X to laud the Indian opener.
Kaif said Jaiswal’s early Test numbers are similar to those of the legendary Sachin Tendulkar and modern-day great Virat Kohli. He also tipped him to break Sehwag’s record of most triple centuries for India in Tests and the highest individual score by an Indian in the longest format. Sehwag’s 319 against South Africa is the highest individual score by an Indian in Test cricket.
“Yashasvi Jaiswal is a batsman with the patience to score big hundreds and set new marks. In his first 26 matches, his numbers are as good as Sachin and Virat. Scoring at a high strike rate, his hundreds mostly put India on path to victory. Sehwag ka 300 wala record, Jaiswal hi todega,” Kaif wrote on X.

Sehwag was the first Indian batter to notch up a triple century in Test cricket. He achieved the feat in the Multan Test against Pakistan in 2004 with a stunning knock of 309 runs. Sehwag slammed his second triple ton against South Africa in the Chennai Test in 2008, where he notched up a brilliant 319, the highest individual Test score by an Indian.
Karun Nair is the only other Indian to have scored a triple hundred in Test cricket.
