West Bengal Medical Student Gang Rape: An incident of gang rape took place with a second year MBBS student in Durgapur, West Bengal on Friday night. The student, who hails from Odisha, studies at IQ City Medical College. Had gone out with a friend near the college gate at around 8.30 pm on Friday evening. During that time, some attackers stopped them and took the student near a forest and gang-raped her. The student’s father told that his daughter’s friend ran away from there and the family suspects that he may also be involved in the incident. In the complaint, the father said that his friend took the student to an empty place under false pretenses. The attackers also snatched the student’s mobile phone and Rs 5,000. After the incident, the student was admitted to a hospital in Durgapur, where her condition is said to be critical.
Police and NCW engaged in investigation
Police on Saturday said they have started investigation and several people are being questioned, including the student’s friend. The statement of the victim has also been recorded. According to PTI report, the state health department has sought a report from the college, while a team from the National Commission for Women (NCW) is going to Durgapur to meet the student and her family to get complete information about the case. NCW member Archana Majumdar said, ‘Crimes against women are increasing in Bengal. Police are not taking active steps in such cases. this is very sad. I would request the Chief Minister to come forward and take concrete steps to stop such crimes.
Questions on women’s safety in West Bengal
The state government is constantly facing criticism regarding the safety of women in West Bengal. Recently, incidents of rape have also come to light twice in college campuses. In July, a law student was allegedly gang-raped at South Kolkata Law College, Kolkata. A former student and two girl students along with a security guard were arrested in this case. In August last year, a 31-year-old post-graduate trainee doctor was raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. In this case, accused Sanjay Roy was arrested, who was sentenced to life imprisonment.
