Veteran Tamil cinema actor Sivakumar, father of popular stars Karthi and Suriya, celebrated his 85th birthday on Tuesday, October 27. On this special occasion, his younger son, Karthi, penned a heartfelt tribute, calling his father’s life a ‘golden standard’ for its discipline, integrity, kindness, and dignified approach.
Karthi shared a nostalgic black-and-white family photograph featuring Sivakumar, his wife Lakshmi, and a toddler-aged Karthi holding balloons, highlighting the close-knit family bonds that have defined the Sivakumar household. Both Karthi and his elder brother Suriya have successfully carved out their own careers in the competitive Tamil film industry, often crediting their father’s guidance and values.
Born Palaniswamy Gounder on October 27, 1941, Sivakumar made his acting debut in 1965 with ‘Kaakum Karangal’. Over a career spanning more than three decades, he graced the screen in 195 films, showcasing remarkable versatility across various genres. His notable works include ‘Kandhan Karunai’ (1967), ‘Bhuvana Oru Kelvikkuri’ (1977), ‘Rosaappo Ravikkaikaari’ (1979), ‘Vandichakkaram’ (1980), and ‘Sindhu Bhairavi’ (1985). Beyond films, he also made a mark in television serials like ‘Chithi’ (1999) and ‘Annamalai’ (2002).
Sivakumar’s illustrious career has been recognized with numerous accolades, including three Filmfare Awards South, two Tamil Nadu State Film Awards, and a Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award. He married Lakshmi in 1974, and together they have three children: Suriya, Karthi, and daughter Brindha, who is a playback singer. Suriya is married to actress Jyotika, further solidifying the family’s strong ties to the Indian film fraternity.
