New Zealand Coach Analyzes T20I Losses Against India

Rob Walter, the head coach of New Zealand, shared his disappointment following the team’s losses in the first two T20I matches against India, which were tightly contested.

Ahead of the third T20I scheduled in Wellington on Sunday, Walter noted that the team had squandered crucial chances that could have led to victories. Despite this, he expressed satisfaction with the overall performance, emphasizing that both matches were within reach for New Zealand.

Series Summary and Performance Analysis

India currently leads the five-match T20I series 2-0 after achieving consecutive four-wicket wins in Christchurch. In the first T20 on October 22, New Zealand set a formidable target of 225/4 in their 20 overs. However, India countered with a robust batting display, highlighted by Sanju Samson’s explosive 67 off 33 balls, enabling them to chase down the target with a score of 230/6 in just 19.4 overs.

In the second T20I on October 24, New Zealand scored 180/5, with Glenn Phillips contributing 70 runs. Tilak Varma’s unbeaten 51 off 26 balls led India to a total of 181/6 in 19.5 overs, securing another four-wicket victory and extending their series lead to 2-0.

Walter Optimistic Despite Limited Match Practice

Walter acknowledged that despite limited competitive play in recent months, his team performed admirably in the first two T20Is against India. He remarked that New Zealand had ‘just not been able to put the finishing touches’ on their performances in these matches.

“We haven’t had much competitive cricket leading into this series, as our last outing was in July during an ODI series in the West Indies. I believe we’ve played quite well in about 80% of each game, but we just couldn’t seal the deal, which is disappointing. Nonetheless, there are many positives to take from both games so far,” Walter added.

The third T20I between India and New Zealand is set to take place in Wellington on Tuesday. India aims to secure a 3-0 lead in the series, while New Zealand seeks their first win to keep their hopes alive.
