Diwali 2025: What is the difference between small Diwali and big Diwali? Clear confusion here

Diwali, also known as Deepavali, is a major festival of Hindu religion which symbolizes the victory of light over darkness, good over evil and knowledge over ignorance. This festival is celebrated for five days, of which Chhoti Diwali and Badi Diwali are the two main days. There is a difference between these two on the basis of dates, worship methods and religious importance.

Chhoti Diwali (Nark Chaturdashi)

Chhoti Diwali, also known as Narak Chaturdashi or Roop Chaudas, is celebrated a day before Diwali. On this day, Lord Krishna killed the demon Narakasura and freed 16,100 girls. For this reason this day is called Narak Chaturdashi. On this day, there is a tradition of taking bath and bathing before sunrise, which eliminates all sins. Also, by worshiping Yamraj, one wishes for freedom from untimely death and the atmosphere is purified by lighting a lamp in the house.

Big Diwali (Lakshmi Puja)

Badi Diwali, also known as Main Diwali or Lakshmi Puja, is celebrated on the new moon day of Kartik month. On this day, Lord Ramchandraji returned to Ayodhya after 14 years of exile, when the people of Ayodhya welcomed him by lighting lamps. For this reason this day is called Diwali. On this day, by worshiping Goddess Lakshmi, Lord Ganesha and Saraswati, one wishes for happiness, prosperity and knowledge in the house. The house is decorated with lamps and colorful chandeliers.

Little and Big Diwali: Difference in celebrations and traditions

On the day of Chhoti Diwali, people generally eat light food and start their day with simple worship. The main objective of this day is self-purification and victory over darkness, hence the celebration remains simple and peaceful. On the contrary, on Big Diwali there is an atmosphere of joy and happiness in the entire house and family. People come together with their entire family and friends to light lamps, make rangoli, distribute sweets and pray for prosperity and happiness with special prayers. The celebration of Badi Diwali is not only religious but also social and family fun.
