Italy: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s special friend and Italian Prime Minister Georgia Meloni is soon going to ban wearing burqa and niqab in her country. The Italian government on Wednesday presented a bill in the Parliament regarding this, according to which there will be a complete ban on wearing niqab and burqa in the entire country, and heavy fine will be imposed on those who do not follow it.

Meloni’s party ‘Brothers of Italy’ has described it as part of a campaign as part of its strategy to deal with Islamic fundamentalism. According to local media reports, if this bill is passed in Parliament, then there will be a ban on face-covering clothes in schools, universities, offices, shops and any public place for women of Muslim community living in Italy.

Ways to stop Islamic fundamentalism

Regarding this, Andrea Delmastro, a prominent MP of the Italian Parliament, issued a statement on social media. Delmastro is one of the main experts on this bill. He said in his social media post that religious freedom is sacred, but it must be followed with full respect for our Constitution and the basic principles of Italy.

Regarding this bill banning burqa and niqab, the ruling party says that it will directly help in preventing the growth of Islamic fundamentalism. Also, this law will help in highlighting the need to deal with religious extremism and hatred being spread in the name of religion.

Heavy fine will be imposed for violation

The bill proposed by the Italian government clearly states that if anyone refuses to comply or deliberately uses any face covering in public places, then a fine ranging from 300 Euros (approximately ₹ 30,959) to 3,000 Euros (approximately ₹ 3,09,588) can be imposed on him. Apart from this, the bill also provides for strict punishment in cases like virginity testing and forced marriage under religious pressure.

According to the report, the Italian government has also proposed strict monitoring on the funding of mosques in the bill. If any Muslim organization is found taking donations from donors who are propagating ideology against the basic freedoms and security of the country, then heavy fine will be imposed on that organization also.
