Lord Shiva said that due to the effect of this fast, the woman gets good fortune and the husband gets long life. This fast is observed on the Chaturthi date of Krishna Paksha of Kartik month. On this day, waterless fast should be observed from morning till moon sighting.

Lord Shiva told Parvati that a woman who observes this fast regularly can save her husband from the danger of death. On this day, when Arghya is offered after seeing the moon, it ensures the good fortune of the woman and the longevity of the husband. After knowing the glory of Karva Chauth from Lord Shiva, Parvati herself observed this fast and gave its message to the world.
