West Bengal Political Crisis: Turmoil has once again intensified in the politics of West Bengal. The alleged discontent within the Trinamool Congress (TMC) has now moved from party offices to the corridors of Parliament. According to sources and various media reports, many party MPs have opened a front against the leadership, which seems to be posing the biggest political challenge to Chief Minister and TMC chief Mamata Banerjee so far.
If these claims prove to be true, it will not only cause discontent within the party but could also change the direction of Bengal politics and opposition politics at the national level.

19 MPs claim to have joined the rebel camp
According to sources, 19 TMC MPs are reportedly seen standing with a different camp. Many big and famous names are said to be included in this list. The names of other MPs including Shatrughan Sinha (Asansol), Yusuf Pathan (Bahrampur), Sayoni Ghosh (Jadavpur), Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar (Barasat), Satabdi Roy (Birbhum), Rachna Banerjee (Hooghly), Deepak Adhikari (Ghatal) are being claimed to be included in these.
According to reports, at present these MPs have neither decided to leave TMC nor made any formal announcement about joining BJP. It is being told that they are considering the strategy of working as a separate group in Parliament.
Can Mamata Banerjee’s strength decrease in Lok Sabha?
Currently TMC has 28 MPs in the Lok Sabha. However, one seat is vacant after the death of Basirhat MP Haji Nurul Islam. Sources claim that after the recent developments, the number of MPs actively supporting Mamata Banerjee in the Lok Sabha may reduce significantly. However, no official confirmation has been made by the party in this regard.
Claim of information given to the speaker
According to reports, the alleged rebel MPs have informed Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla about the formation of a separate parliamentary group. It is being told that this group can be led by Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar. Political analysts believe that if this case moves forward, there could be a long legal and political battle over anti-defection law, parliamentary procedures and party whip.
The meeting held in Delhi increased speculation
The political stir increased further on Tuesday when reports emerged that some MPs held a meeting at the residence of senior BJP leader Bhupendra Yadav in Delhi. In a picture that went viral on social media and in political circles, it was claimed that several TMC MPs and Rajya Sabha member Sukhendu Shekhar Roy were present in it. However, these claims could not be independently confirmed. Meanwhile, the report of news agency PTI also claimed that about 20 MPs had participated in an informal meeting in Delhi.
Challenge to leadership in assembly also
Before this alleged rebellion in Parliament, there were reports of a setback to the TMC leadership in the West Bengal Assembly also. According to reports, 58 out of 80 party MLAs expressed disagreement with the leadership’s decision regarding the selection of the leader of the opposition. It was reported that he took a stand in support of expelled MLA Ritabrata Banerjee rather than the candidate chosen by the party. If these incidents are true, they indicate that discontent is not limited to MPs alone but has reached various levels of the organization.
Discussion of increasing closeness with INDIA alliance and Congress
Amidst the political crisis, the INDIA alliance meeting in Delhi also remained the center of discussion. Observers believe that during this period Mamata Banerjee’s stance appeared relatively soft. On the other hand, after continuous meetings between the Congress leadership and Mamata Banerjee, speculations about a possible political agreement between the two parties have also increased. In some political circles, discussion has also started on the possibilities of a big political equation between TMC and Congress in the future.
