Chennai: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) in Chennai has issued a significant weather advisory, forecasting a week of widespread rainfall across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal, culminating in a yellow alert for heavy rain in multiple districts starting today.
The warning comes after heavy rain already drenched various districts of the state last night, signalling the onset of intensified monsoon activity.

The spatial spread of the heaviest rainfall is predicted to expand significantly on Tuesday, October 11. The IMD has forecast heavy rain at one or two places in a wider set of districts, including Nilgiris, Erode, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Salem, Tirupattur, Vellore, Tiruvannamalai, Kallakurichi, and Villupuram.
Chennai Weather Update: Moderate Rains and Temperature Dip
For the state capital, the forecast suggests a partly cloudy sky with light to moderate rain and thunderstorms likely in a few parts of the city. A noticeable change in temperature is also expected. The maximum temperature is likely to be around 34 to 35 degrees Celsius, while the minimum will hover between 26 and 27 degrees Celsius.
Meteorological Reasoning Behind the Widespread Rainfall
The active rainfall is being driven by multiple weather systems. According to the Chennai Meteorological Department, an atmospheric low-level circulation is currently prevailing over South Indian regions. Simultaneously, similar systems are active over the Kumari Sea and its adjacent areas, as well as over the Southeast Arabian Sea and the adjoining North Kerala areas. These circulations are pulling moisture inland, creating ideal conditions for sustained precipitation.
Tamil Nadu Weatherman Post
Private weather blogger Pradeep Jhon know as Tamil Nadu weatherman predicted that “What a day for interiors right from Krishnagiri – Erode – Tiruppur – Karur – Salem – Dharmapuri – Tiruvannamalai – Nilgiris -Vellore – Ranipet – and adjoining Tiruvallur areas all get the Transistional winds with convergence in interiors. The winds are changing from westerlies and will completely shift to easterlies around 16th October and the NE monsoon onset will happen around 17-19 October.”
Temperature Trends and Fishermen Warning for Coastal Areas
As the rain sets in, the maximum temperature across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal is generally expected to see no major immediate change. However, the IMD has projected a gradual decrease of 2 to 3 degrees Celsius at a few places over the coming days, with maximum temperatures likely to remain below normal.
A crucial warning has been issued for fishermen. The weather department has reported that cyclonic winds with speeds reaching 55 kilometers per hour are likely to blow over the coastal areas of South Tamil Nadu, the Gulf of Mannar, and the adjoining Kumari Sea, making venturing out dangerous.
