India on its way to becoming the third largest economy
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said on Thursday that India is on its way to becoming the world’s third largest economy by 2028 and Britain is well placed to be a partner in this journey. Starmer said that the India-UK trade agreement will give Britain the opportunity to increase its leadership in technology, life sciences, renewable energy and other sectors. He said that both countries are also deepening the UK-India Technology Security Initiative. Starmer, who arrived in Mumbai with a high-level delegation on Wednesday, said he also discussed the Russia-Ukraine conflict with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and both countries adopted a common approach to ending the conflict. Starmer described US President Donald Trump’s Israel-Hamas peace proposal as a major achievement and said that this plan will bring relief to the hostages of Gaza, the citizens and the whole world. He said that now we will work with our partners to ensure that this peace plan is implemented completely and without delay. Starmer said Britain will partner with India on its vision of a “developed India” by 2047. He said that both the countries will further deepen cooperation in the areas of artificial intelligence, advanced communications and defense technologies.
Germany will be left behind
If Keir Starmer’s prediction is correct then India will leave Germany behind in terms of economy in the next three years. According to the IMF report, at present the size of India’s total GDP is 4.18 trillion dollars. In the current year itself, India has achieved the status of the fourth largest economy in the world by pushing Japan down by one place. In the next three years, the size of India’s GDP may be between 6 to 7 trillion dollars. If this happens, India will be the third largest economy in the world and will leave Germany behind. At present the size of Germany’s economy is 4.86 trillion dollars. It is not that the size of Germany’s economy will not increase during this period, but the growth rate will be so low that India can easily leave Germany behind. According to estimates, the growth rate of India’s GDP may range between 6.5 percent to 7.5 percent by the year 2028. Whereas Germany’s growth rate is estimated to be 1.5 percent between 2026 and 2028. In such a situation, you can understand how easily India can leave Germany behind.
Trade deal will bring energy to relations
Before that, the country’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi, after extensive talks with his British counterpart Keir Starmer, said that the India-UK partnership is an important pillar of global stability and economic progress at a time when the world is grappling with uncertainties. The talks mainly focused on promoting relations in the areas of trade, defense and technology. Following the Modi-Starmer talks, both sides announced plans to supply lightweight multi-role missile systems to the Indian Army to strengthen its air defense capabilities and agreed to finalize an inter-governmental agreement to jointly develop marine electric propulsion systems for India’s naval platforms. In the talks, both the leaders said that the signing of the historic free trade agreement between the two sides in July will bring new energy to the relations, as it will reduce tariffs, increase access to each other’s markets, increase trade, create employment and benefit the industries and consumers of both the countries.
India and Britain are natural partners
The British Prime Minister reached India’s financial capital on Wednesday along with more than 100 CEOs, entrepreneurs and vice-chancellors of universities, where he was given a grand welcome.
