Aryna Sabalenka extends Wuhan winning streak to 19 matches with another power-packed victory

New Delhi: Aryna Sabalenka extended her winning streak at the Wuhan Open tennis tournament to 19 wins with yet another power-packed victory on Thursday. This win powered Sabalenka to the quarterfinals of the event where she would be aiming to further extend her dominance at the event.

The winner of the US Open Grand Slam in 2025, Sabalenka beat Liudmila Samsonova 6-3, 6-2 to advance to the quarterfinals of the WTA 1000-level tournament. In the previous editions, the women’s tennis player has won titles at the Wuhan Open in 2018, 2019 and 2024. With just three wins away from grabbing another title in Wuhan, the reigning champion would aim at continuing her brilliant run.

Meanwhile for Sabalenka, this was her eighth consecutive victory and her 58th win of the current year where she has been absolutely exceptional. In addition, this the tennis player’s fourth entry into the quarterfinals at Wuhan.

Jessica Pegula advances to last-8

Earlier in the day at the event, Jessica Pegula recovered from an early service break in the third set to beat Ekaterina Alexandrova 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 and advance to the last-8 stage in Wuhan. Sixth-seeded Pegula, who lost in the China Open semifinals last week, leveled the deciding set at 2-2, then won four of the last five games for victory. It was Pegula’s sixth straight three-set match, and for the fifth time, she won.

‘I can’t remember the last time I played two sets,’ Pegula said. ‘But I’ve been competing really hard and I’ve been playing a lot of really good players. It was different conditions today with the roof closed and I think it took us a little while to get adjusted,’ she added.

In some of the other matches which are scheduled later in the day, number two Iga Swiatek will play Belinda Bencic while number three Coco Gauff will be up against Zhang Shuai.
