Shubman Gill creates history, becomes 1st Indian to achieve remarkable feat with century in Manchester Test vs England

New Delhi: Shubman Gill notched up his 9th hundred in the fourth Test match of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy at Old Trafford in Manchester on Sunday, July 27. The Indian captain is standing tall after the Men in Blue lost two early wickets in the second innings.

Chris Woakes removed Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sai Sudharsan on a duck in the first over. But after their dismissal, Gill forged a 188-run partnership with KL Rahul to help India recover from early jolts. England captain Ben Stokes broke the partnership, dismissing Rahul for 90 runs.

Gill breaks multiple records with 9th Test century

Gill became the first Asian cricketer to score 700 runs in a Test series played in England. Before him, the record of scoring the most runs in a Test series played in England was held by Pakistan’s Mohammad Yousuf, who scored 631 runs in the Pakistan tour of England in 2006.

He is the first batter from Asia to score 700 runs in a Test series played in the SENA (South Africa, England, New Zealand, and Australia) countries. Gill also became only the third Indian to cross 700 runs in a single Test series, surpassing Yashasvi Jaiswal’s record of 712 against England in the home series.

Gill became only third captain in history, after Sunil Gavaskar and Don Bradman, to score four centuries in a Test series as captain. Gill also joined the elite list of batters to hit four hundreds in a single Test series, featuring Bradman, Mohammad Yousuf, Jacques Kallis, Gavaskar, and Virat Kohli.
