This will reduce the heavy traffic burden on the existing Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai. Before the inauguration, the PM took stock of the airport. VVIP terminal to be built at Navi Mumbai airport

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu and industrialist Gautam Adani were present at the inauguration of Navi Mumbai Airport. Domestic flights are expected to start soon from the new airport. International flights may start by December. Phase One of Navi Mumbai Airport has four terminals and two parallel runways. There is a plan to build a terminal just for VVIPs. Its construction will start in 2026 and will be completed by 2030.

Why is Navi Mumbai Airport special?

Navi Mumbai Airport has been designed by London-based Zaha Hadid Architects. Its terminal structure is inspired by the lotus flower. It displays art related to the history and culture of Maharashtra. One of the major features of this airport is the Automatic People Mover. It is a rapid transport system connecting all four terminals. Infrastructure for storage of aircraft fuel has been prepared at this airport. The airport will generate approximately 47 MW of solar energy. Electric bus services will run from here. This is going to be the first airport in India which will be connected with water taxi service.

Navi Mumbai airport will be a completely digital airport

IndiGo, Air India and Akasa Air have already confirmed plans to commence operations from Navi Mumbai airport. This airport will be equipped with the facility of paperless boarding, e-gates and mobile app for real time updates. This will be the first completely digital airport in the country.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis called the inauguration of the new airport a “grand moment” for the development of Maharashtra and Mumbai. He has announced that the airport will be named after late Dinkar Balu Patil. He had raised his voice for fair compensation for project affected persons during the development of Navi Mumbai.
