Big news for wanderlusters: As of July 2025, Sri Lanka has made it significantly easier for tourists from 40 countries to enter the island without paying visa fees. It’s a bold move aimed at reviving the tourism industry and giving its economy another shot of momentum.
So if you’ve been eyeing a trip to Sri Lanka’s beaches, tea plantations, or ancient ruins, now might be the time.
What Is Sri Lanka’s Free Visa Policy?
It’s pretty straightforward. If you’re from one of the 40 eligible countries, you no longer need to pay the standard visa fee when visiting Sri Lanka as a tourist. You still need to apply for a visa online, but there’s no charge for this process.
The program initially launched in 2023 for just seven countries:
- China
- India
- Indonesia
- Russia
- Thailand
- Malaysia
- Japan
Now, it’s expanded—big time.

Visa Duration and Conditions

- It’s single-entry.

- The visa is strictly for tourism. No work or long-term stay.
Why Sri Lanka Is Doing This
Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath made it clear: this is about boosting tourism without overcomplicating the system.
The government estimates a $66 million loss in visa revenue. But the bet is that more tourists will mean more money spent on hotels, restaurants, transport, and local experiences, helping the economy grow without added strain on infrastructure.
And honestly, with the rupee stabilising and local prices still favourable for many travellers, this move could make Sri Lanka one of the most attractive destinations in the region.
Final Thoughts
Sri Lanka is removing cost barriers to make visiting easier. If you’re from one of the 40 countries on the list, you now have fewer excuses not to go. From hiking in Ella to surfing in Arugam Bay to temple-hopping in Kandy, there’s no shortage of reasons to pack a bag.
So check your passport, grab your e-visa, and maybe plan that trip you’ve been putting off.
