Lamborghini’s EV stalling as company moves towards hybridisation

New Delhi: Lamborghini had announced in December that their first EV, based on the Lanzador concept first shown in 2023, was going to be delayed. The car was originally set to come in 2028, but now has been pushed to 2029 with demand for high-end electric cars diminishing. Recently, in an interview with Carexpert CEO Stephan Winkelmann, has said that the car might not be an EV at all.

Winkelmann noted that the “acceptance curve” for the EV is slowly diminishing across most segments. The brand has further decided that the Urus replacement would be another plug-in hybrid, and they will be postponing the launch of the fourth model. Winkelmann, though, didn’t dismiss the idea of a plug-in hybrid for the production version of the Lanzador.

Lamborghini changes stance

This stance is completely different from when Lamborghini decided to go against releasing an all-electric car to increase their portfolio in the production lineup. The company has been turning the lineup towards hybrid with the coming of the flagship Revuelto and then coming with the Urus SE hybrid. This year, they brought the Temerario, completing the portfolio.

Winkelmann said that the right timing for the EV will be the key and felt they need to have the car when people are ready to buy it. Being a tech-driven brand, he felt that there was an emotional side to buyers, and it isn’t just numbers that determine the vehicle.

Lamborghini is still committed to internal combustion as long as it is possible. The company is having plans for refuelling to make longevity happen. With sustainable fuels nearer, Winkelmann felt it was an opportunity for the ICE, and for now, two supercars will be there. With Europe going back on their mission of making it zero emission by 2030 plan, many companies have bought themselves some time for now.
