Actress Sobhita Dhulipala believes her role in director Pa. Ranjith’s upcoming film ‘Vettuvam’ represents a significant step forward in her career. Speaking in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter India, the actor said she had given the project an unusually personal level of commitment and felt it showcased some of her strongest work.
Sobhita plays Rathi, a character who stands apart from the restrained, quietly determined women she has portrayed in several earlier projects. Although Rathi shares their inner strength, the actor explained that her new character expresses it through a far more direct, energetic and uninhibited personality.
For Sobhita, one of the most exciting aspects of the role is that Rathi is not merely present to support the male characters or contribute to the emotional side of the narrative. Instead, she makes her own decisions and actively participates in the film’s action.
The actor also highlighted how action cinema frequently gives men the most physically demanding roles while women are expected to carry the emotional weight of the story. Rathi challenges that convention by taking an active role in the unfolding events and refusing to remain on the sidelines.
Sobhita credited Pa. Ranjith with helping her bring out this fearless side of the character. She said the filmmaker encouraged her to embrace Rathi’s uninhibited nature and explore a performance that combines physicality, movement and emotional freedom.
According to the actor, Rathi is someone who acts on her convictions without constantly worrying about how other people might judge her. This quality allowed Sobhita to experiment with a more dynamic screen presence, incorporating action and dance into a character she described as lively and free-spirited.
Directed by Pa. Ranjith, ‘Vettuvam’ is described as an apocalyptic action drama that unfolds across different periods. The film features Arya, Sobhita Dhulipala, VR Dinesh, Kalaiyarasan and Shabbeer Kallarakal, among others. The project is being produced under Ranjith’s Neelam Productions banner and is expected to reach theatres in December.
