What is Thali?
The plate is associated with the tradition of South India. This can be called the South Indian form of Mangalsutra. The plate is usually in the form of a golden locket tied in yellow thread (turmeric dyed). This locket is considered a symbol of Devi Shakti.
Tie Tie Ritual – Mangalya Dharanam
There is a special ritual during marriage called Mangalya Dharanam. In this ritual, the groom ties a plate around the bride’s neck. The groom ties the first two lumps, which symbolizes mutual relations and commitment of the husband and wife. The third lump usually binds the groom’s sister or other women of the family, who is considered a symbol of the relationship between the two families.

What is Mangalasutra?
Mangalsutra is associated with the tradition of North, West and Central India. The word mangalsutra means-Ithm thread. It is a necklace, in which gold lockets or pendants are placed on a garland of black beads (pearls). Sometimes white, red or golden pearls are also added to it.
Importance of mangalsutra
Mangalsutra is a symbol of love, loyalty and security between husband and wife. It is believed that its black pearls protect against sight or evil forces.
Regional beliefs related to mangalsutra
At the time of marriage in Maharashtra, the groom wears Mangalsutra around the bride’s neck, which is called Shiva-Shakti Bandhan. This bond is a symbol of energy and harmony between husband and wife.
