The incarnation of Mother Ganga on earth was possible due to the years of penance and efforts of King Bhagiratha. Let us read the interesting story of Ganga Dussehra.
Story of Ganga Dussehra (Ganga Dussehra Ki Katha)
The story of Mother Ganga’s descent on earth is very ancient. According to the mythological story, in ancient times there was a king. His name was Raja Sagar. He had conquered all the seven seas. He had two queens, whose names were Keshini and Sumati. Queen Keshani had a confused son. On the other hand, Queen Sumati had 60 thousand sons. Once King Sagar organized an Ashwamedha Yagya, but Indra stole the horse of the Yagya.
Indra tied the horse in the ashram of Kapil Muni. King Sagar’s 60 thousand sons went there in search of a horse. Seeing the horse in Kapil Muni’s ashram, he accused Kapil Muni of theft. Due to this, Kapil Muni was filled with anger and with his power he destroyed all the 60 thousand sons of King Sagar. Their souls did not get peace and salvation. It was necessary for Mother Ganga to come to earth for the peace and salvation of the souls of King Sagar’s sons, but this was not possible for many generations.
King Sagar’s son Asamanjas performed rigorous penance, but he could not bring Mother Ganga to earth. Raja Sagar’s grandson Anshuman and then great grandson Raja Dilip tried to liberate the ancestors, but they also failed. After this, Bhagiratha, son of King Dilip, performed rigorous penance for years. Then Mother Ganga became happy and agreed to come to earth on the orders of Lord Brahma, but it was necessary to control the speed of Mother Ganga. In such a situation, Lord Shiva took Ganga in his hair and then slowly made it flow on the earth. In this way Mother Ganga came to earth.
