Tech professional Karthik Modi has revealed on social media that while living in India, he received an international job offer worth about Rs 1.8 crore annually. The special thing was that for this he neither had any strong network abroad nor any previous experience of living in another country. Karthik has given the credit of his success not to any shortcut or hack, but to a systematic preparation and continuous hard work. He told that first of all, with the help of platforms like LinkedIn Jobs, Indeed and Levels.fyi, he made a list of 25 to 30 such foreign companies which provided visa sponsorship. After this he analyzed about 35 to 40 job descriptions. The skills which were in demand again and again, made them the basis of our preparation. On this basis, he prepared a clear roadmap of 10 to 12 weeks.
According to Karthik, the first five weeks were spent in the preparation of Data Structure and Algorithm (DSA). The next three weeks focused on system design, while the subsequent weeks included preparation for domain knowledge, behavioral interviews, and mock interviews. He told that instead of solving hundreds of questions in DSA, he focused on about 100 important problems and practiced explaining each solution.
He described preparation for system design as the biggest game changer. Under this, in-depth preparation was done for 8 to 10 major systems like authentication, payment, search, notification and feed. Also systematically documented our actual projects, so that scale, performance, and technical decisions could be discussed concretely during interviews.
Karthik also said that merely giving correct answers is not enough in international interviews. The candidate’s thinking, problem solving approach and honesty are also seen. So he developed the habit of giving clear and structured answers and where the answer was not known, he admitted it clearly rather than guessing.
He prepared a global-standard one-page resume, took several mock interviews and applied only for jobs that matched his profile. Ultimately this strategy got him an international job offer of Rs 1.8 crore directly from India. Karthik’s message is clear, it is not necessary to go abroad first to get a foreign job. Preparation done in the right direction, continuous practice and a thoughtful strategy can take you to the big companies of the world.
