Bangladesh batter Sobhana Mostary etched her name into the history books on Sunday, compiling an innings of 118 against Australia at Allan Border Field in Brisbane to register the highest-ever individual score by a Bangladeshi player in Women’s One-Day Internationals.
Her maiden international century came during the second ODI of the three-match bilateral series, steering Bangladesh to a competitive total of 220 for 6 in their allocated 50 overs after the tourists were put in to bat.
Sobhana Mostary Creates History
Record-Breaking Knock in Brisbane
Coming in during the early stages of the innings, Mostary anchored the innings with composure before expanding her strokeplay against Australia’s bowling attack. She reached her three-figure milestone from 123 deliveries and finished with 118 off 134 balls, an innings that included 18 boundaries.
Her knock eclipsed the previous national record held by Fargana Hoque, who had scored 107 against India in Mirpur in July 2023. Mostary’s innings also marks the first time any Bangladeshi woman has scored an international century against Australia.
Pivotal Stand With Nigar Sultana
Following early wickets that left Bangladesh vulnerable against the host attack, Mostary joined captain Nigar Sultana to stabilise the innings.
The pair compiled a 150-run partnership for the fourth wicket, guiding Bangladesh past the 150-run threshold in the 41st over. Sultana played a disciplined supporting hand, registering a half-century with 50 runs off 97 balls before Australia managed late breakthroughs.
Context in the Bilateral Series
The milestone arrives as a significant bright spot for Bangladesh in their ongoing tour. Australia took a 1-0 lead in the three-match series following a comfortable victory in the opening fixture at the same venue on Friday.
Mostary’s effort provided the visiting side with a solid platform in the second match, elevating Bangladesh to their highest ODI total of the series to date.
