Moderate rainfall expected in central districts of Kerala till October 10

Kozhikode: Kerala is expected to receive moderate showers at isolated places in central Kerala and parts of north Kerala till October 10.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for several districts in Kerala from October 8 to 10, warning of moderate to heavy rainfall across the state.

On Wednesday, the alert will be in place for Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki, Kozhikode and Wayanad. On Thursday, it will extend to Idukki, Palakkad and Malappuram. By Friday, Pathanamthitta, Idukki and Kannur will remain under yellow alert. The IMD said these districts are likely to receive rainfall between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm within a 24-hour period.

“Parts of central and north Kerala are expected to receive moderate rainfall for the next 5 days. However, no indications of heavy downpour has come up till now. Kerala is expected to receive the north east rainfall from the month of November”, said a senior official at MET department.

Possible impacts of the rainfall

Poor visibility and traffic congestion due to intense rainfall.

Temporary traffic disruptions and waterlogging on roads caused by uprooted trees or broken branches.

Damage to power lines and kutcha houses.

Harm to standing crops and vegetables nearing harvest.

Chances of landslides, mudslides, and lightning strikes.

Safety measures to be adopted

Authorities have urged residents to stay alert, follow traffic advisories, and avoid vulnerable structures. Farmers are advised to support vegetable pandals, and people are asked to take shelter during thunderstorms and stay updated on weather bulletins.
