New Delhi: Mexico’s all-time leading goal scorer Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez is under fire after making controversial comments on gender roles in a series of social media videos. The 37-year-old striker is currently playing for Chivas and sparked widespread criticism by telling women to “allow themselves to be led by man” and accusing them if “eradicating masculinity” in society.
The remarks posted by him over the weekend across his Instagram and TikTok accounts have quickly drew attention with many calling out the statements as sexist and out dated. even Mexico’s president Claudia Sheinbaum weighed in saying that while Hernandez may be a talented footballer he has “a lot to learn” when it comes to understanding women’s rights and equality.
Fined by Mexico Football Federation
Following the backlash, the Mexico Football Federation along with Liga MX and Liga MX Femenil announced that Hernandez would be fined for promoting “sexiest stereotypes” that violate gender and diversity policies within the sport. They classified his remark as “media violence” and issued a warning stating that more severe sanctions could be imposed if he repeats such behaviour in the future.

Hernandez’s current club Chivas has also issued a statement condemning his remarks reiterating their commitment to rejecting behaviours and expressions that reinforce stereotypes limiting respect and equality in the society. while the exact amount of the fine has not been disclosed, the punishment marks the first time the FMF has sanctioned a player over misogynistic comments.
Hernandez returned to Chivas last year on a two year deal and since then have faced challenges on the pitch. In his 25 appearances he has managed to strike only twice. Currently he is sidelined dur to injury and has missed Chivas opening matches of the Apertura tournament.
Once a prolific forward celebrated for his sharp instincts inside the box has got a lot of scrutiny off the field after his take. Fans and critics have urged him to focus on improving his performances especially as Chivas look to regain momentum this season.
Chicharito’s recent comments reflects a shift in his public persona with many attributing to his collaboration with life coach Diego Dreyfus who has been involved in shaping his social media presence in recent years. Once known for his low-key profile Hernandez has recently become more vocal online using his social media platforms to share personal views which now have landed him in controversy.
As the FMF investigation continues Hernandez’s situation serves as a reminder of the responsibility high-profile athletes hold in shaping public discourse.
