Mumbai: The Mumbai Police has implemented a 30-day ban on the storage, sale and use of sky lanterns (flying lanterns) in the city. The ban has been implemented to ensure public safety during the ongoing festive season. The ban will remain in place from October 12 to November 10.
The ban order was issued by Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations) Akbar Pathan. The order read that the release of sky lanterns can create fire hazard and endanger public safety. The order added that these sky lanterns often get entangled in electric wires, or fall on vehicles, building rooftops which can cause fires or other accidents.
‘Anti-social elements may use to disrupt peace’
Mumbai Police officials also said that anti-social elements might misuse these sky lanterns to divert attention and create nuisance. To prevent this, launch, sale, or storage of flying lanterns have been banned in all parts of Mumbai.
The order further read that any one found violating this order will face strict legal action. In addition to this, Mumbai Police have also urged the city residents to celebrate an eco-friendly and safe Diwali this year by avoiding use of such lanterns and unsafe firecrackers.
