According to Drik Panchang, the Amavasya date of Jyeshtha Adhikamas will start on June 14, 2026 at 12:19 pm. It will end on June 15, 2026 at 8:23 am. In Hindu religion, most of the fasts and festivals are celebrated on the basis of Udaya Tithi i.e. the date present at the time of sunrise. Since Amavasya Tithi will be present at the time of sunrise on 15th June and this day is also Monday, hence the fast and puja of Somvati Amavasya will be done on 15th June 2026, Monday.
Why is Peepal tree circumambulated 108 times?
The tradition of worshiping the Peepal tree and circumambulating it 108 times on the day of Somvati Amavasya has been going on for centuries. Peepal is considered a very sacred tree in Hindu religion. There is a religious belief that Lord Brahma resides in the roots of the Peepal tree, Lord Vishnu resides in the trunk and Lord Shiva resides in its upper part. There is a famous mythological story behind doing 108 parikrama of Peepal tree on Somvati Amavasya. According to the story, the husband of a devoted woman named Sona had died. To bring her husband back to life, she circumambulated the Peepal tree 108 times with great devotion and faith and prayed to God. Pleased with her unwavering loyalty and devotion, the gods gave her a new life again as her husband. Since then, the belief became popular that circumambulating the Peepal tree 108 times on the day of Somvati Amavasya brings blessings of unbroken good fortune, happy married life and protection of the family.
What is the religious significance of Somvati Amavasya?
According to religious beliefs, bathing, charity, chanting, penance and worship give special results on the day of Somvati Amavasya.
