In Punjab, the Aam Aadmi Party on Sunday declared one of the richest people of Punjab and Rajinder Gupta as its candidate for the Rajya Sabha by -election to be held on 24 October. This by -election is taking place to fill the empty space after AAP’s Sanjeev Arora’s resignation, who resigned from the Rajya Sabha after being elected in the assembly. Rajinder Gupta has been nominated for the upper house in place of Sanjeev Arora. Arora’s term was to end on April 9, 2028. Currently, Chief Minister is working as a minister in the Punjab cabinet led by Bhagwant Mann. The party said in a statement that the Political Affairs Committee announces the nomination of Rajinder Gupta as a candidate for the Rajya Sabha election on behalf of the Punjab Legislative Assembly.

Rajinder Gupta is one of the richest people of Punjab. In the year 2025, his total assets are $ 1.2 billion i.e. about Rs 10,000 crore. Gupta was born in Bathinda to cotton businessman Nohar Chand. Rajinder Gupta, who comes from a simple background, has made his mark in politics by working in major government positions in many administrats.

Rajinder Gupta is the founder of Trident, Trident Group’s leading company Trident Limited and is the first generation businessman. He was awarded the Padma Shri by the then President APJ Abdul Kalam in 2007 for his specific services in the field of business and industry. In the year 2022, Gupta resigned from the post of Trident Group President and Managing Director (CMD) citing health reasons and is currently an honorary president of the group.
Apart from this, he also has a trident group in Ludhiana. Which works in the sector of textiles, paper and chemicals and its manufacturing services are in Punjab and Madhya Pradesh. Rajinder Gupta has earlier held positions in Congress and Shiromani Akali Dal-BJP governments.
