Chennai: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning for heavy rainfall in 12 districts of Tamil Nadu today, October 5, 2025, attributing the weather pattern to an atmospheric low-level circulation prevailing over the region. The alert specifically highlights Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Salem, Tirupattur, Namakkal, and Ramanathapuram districts for particularly intense downpours.
“Heavy rain is likely at one or two places in Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Salem, Tirupattur, Namakkal, Trichy, Dindigul, Madurai, Theni, Virudhunagar, Sivaganga and Ramanathapuram districts,” IMD weather bulletin read.
This warning follows a night of heavy rain accompanied by thunder and lightning that lashed various parts of the state. The forecast indicates that the wet spell will continue, with light to moderate rains expected at many places across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal.
Cyclone Shakti Weakens, But Moisture Fuels Tamil Nadu Rains
While the severe weather system ‘Cyclone Shakti’ is now on a weakening trend over the Arabian Sea, it has contributed to the atmospheric conditions affecting Tamil Nadu. According to the IMD, Cyclone Shakti, which intensified into a severe cyclonic storm, has moved west-southwestwards and is currently located about 470 km west of Dwarka, Gujarat. It is predicted to gradually weaken as it changes course.
Chennai Weather Forecast For Today
The primary driver for Tamil Nadu’s rainfall is the low-level atmospheric circulation over South India and Tamil Nadu. This system is pumping moisture into the region, leading to widespread precipitation. The IMD has also forecast a drop in maximum temperatures by 2-3° Celsius in a few areas across Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal from today until October 6. For the state capital, Chennai, a partly cloudy sky is expected with a likelihood of light to moderate rain and thunderstorms in some areas. The city can expect maximum and minimum temperatures to hover around 32-33°C and 24-25°C, respectively. The meteorological department has advised residents to stay updated on weather alerts.
